FOND DU LAC, Wis. – The Concordia Wisconsin field hockey team opened the season on Friday night at Marian. The Sabres secured a 3-2 victory to open the season in a non-conference affair.
The Black and Blue opened the game with a 5-0 advantage in shots in the first quarter.
The Sabres scored the first goal of the season in the 25th minute.
The Falcons tied the game in the final minute of the second quarter on a penalty corner. Sophomore Caitlyn Weitzel (Fallston, Md.) tapped in a wide-open shot on a corner after senior Paige Armijo (Reseda, Calif.) deflected a pass from junior Katelyn Cardinale (Mt. Laurel, N.J.).
Marian reclaimed the lead with a goal in the 38th minute and expanded the lead 100 seconds into the fourth quarter.
Caitlyn Weitzel struck again on a corner when she again tapped in a deflection from Paige Armijo after junior Katie Quirke (Antioch, Ill.) tossed the ball into the circle.
The Sabres did not allow another look at the net to secure the victory.
Marian held a 22-12 advantage in shots on Friday night. Paige Armijo led the effort with four shots.
Sophomore Parks Cawthray (Oakville, Ontario) collected 12 saves on the evening.
Friday was the first multi-goal game for Caitlyn Weitzel. All four of her career goals have come in the opening weekend of the year.
The Falcons host Earlham in the home opener on Sunday.
