Men's Tennis finishes runner-up at NACC Tournament

MADISON – A great season, which included a program-record 18 victories, came to an end for the Concordia University Wisconsin Men's Tennis team Sunday. The Falcons opened the day with a 5-2 win over MSOE in the NACC Tournament semifinals, but would fall to Edgewood Collge, 5-2, in the finals.

THE BASICS

MSOE MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
- The Falcons opened the semifinal match against MSOE by taking two of three in doubles play for a 2-1 lead. The No. 1 duo of senior Benjamin Nommensen (Waupaca, Wis.) and sophomore Brad Guendel (Greendale, Wis.) won 8-4, while the No. 2 team of freshman Christian Docter (Madison, Wis.) and sophomore Ceejay Schaffner (Winona, Minn.) picked up a win by the same score. All three doubles matches were decided by an 8-4 result.

- The Falcons gained singles wins at No. 3, 4 and 6 to down the Raiders in the semifinals. The No. 2 and No. 5 singles matches went unfinished, with CUW leading in each matchup.

- The clinching match was won by Schaffner, as he posted a 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 3 singles. Guendel rolled to a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles, while senior Robert Spiering (Wauwatosa, Wis.) netted a 6-4, 6-1 victory in his No. 6 singles matchup.

EDGEWOOD MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
- The top-seeded Eagles put the Falcons in an early hole, winning all three double matches. The closest of the three came at No. 3 doubles, where freshman Jonah Fowle (Menomonee Falls, Wis.) and junior Trevor Budewitz (Watertown, Wis.) were edged, 9-7.

- Guendel and Budewitz got the Falcons on the board with wins at No. 4 and 5 singles. Guendel won 6-3, 6-2, while Budewitz eased his way to a 6-1, 6-1 win. The No. 3 and 6 singles matches went unfinished after Edgewood picked up the fifth point.
