Men's Tennis splits a pair of non-conference matches

NEW BERLIN, Wis. – The Concordia University Wisconsin Men's Tennis team dropped its opening match Saturday against St. Mary's (Minn.) but rebounded well with a win over Carroll, splitting a pair of non-conference contests. The Falcons defeated Carroll in the afternoon by a 6-3 score, while falling earlier in the day, 7-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Falcons picked up a pair of tiebreak victories over Carroll, which proved to be the difference in the afternoon match. At No. 1 doubles, sophomore Brad Guendel (Greendale, Wis.) and freshman Christian Docter (Madison, Wis.) rallied for a 9-8 (10-5) victory. Docter kept that magic going in singles play, earning a 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-4) win as well.

- CUW was 2-1 in doubles play against the Pioneers as the No. 2 team of senior Benjamin Nommensen (Waupaca, Wis.) and junior Trevor Budewitz (Watertown, Wis.) earned an 8-3 win.

- The other singles wins against Carroll came at the No. 4, 5 and 6 positions. Sophomore Ceejay Schaffner (Winona, Minn.) was once again dominant at No. 5 singles, picking up his second 6-0, 6-0 win in as many days. Budewitz also rolled at No. 4 singles, 6-1, 6-2.

- Senior Robert Spiering (Wauwatosa, Wis.) also posted a singles win over Carroll, netting a 6-3, 6-4 decision.

- Schaffner and Spiering had the Falcons lone wins in the morning match against the Cardinals, both needing a tiebreak to get there. Schaffner won 2-6, 7-6 (7-5), 1-0 (10-6) in a hard-fought match, while Spiering added a 2-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-6) win of his own.
