Volleyball ends Pizza Hut Classic with 2-2 record

OSHKOSH, Wis. – Concordia University Wisconsin split a pair of matches during each of the of Pizza Hut Classic, hosted by UW-Oshkosh at the Kolf Sports Center. The Falcons finished in a tie for fourth place among the 12 teams that competed at the competitive tournament.

CUW (7-2) began Friday's competition with a 3-1 (25-12, 25-23, 25-20) loss to host UW-Oshkosh before defeating St. Catherine University in straight sets 3-0 (25-20, 25-18, 25-20). During Saturday's play they fell 3-1 (25-19, 17-25, 26-24, 25-17) to the College of St. Benedict prior to ending the tournament on a high not with a 3-1 (25-8, 18-25, 25-12, 25-22) victory over Maranatha Baptist University.

Senior Hannah Griffiths (Antigo, Wis.) and freshman Ashley Jehlicka (Salem, Wis.) were named to the All-Pizza Hut Classic Tournament team.

Freshman Terese Zymanek (Menomonee Falls, Wis.) had 10 kills to lead CUW against UW-Oshkosh, while Jehlicka recorded 21 assists and 12 digs. Griffiths dug 15 attack attempts and senior Erin Howard (Labadie, Mo.) recorded 10 digs. The Falcons hit just .162 against the Titans.

CUW rebounded in the nightcap on Friday against the Wildcats with a .338 attack percentage and was led by Griffiths' 13 kills and three service aces. Jehlicka had five kills, 15 assists and five digs. Sophomore Karina Klotz (Hubertus, Wis.) added eight assists and four digs.

In the opener on Saturday, the Falcons hit above .200 just once in the four sets against the 14th-ranked Blazers. Jehlicka posted her second career triple double in the last five matches with 13 kills, 14 assists and 11 digs. Klotz accumulated 11 assists and nine digs, while Griffiths recorded 14 digs, four kills and four service aces.

CUW returns to the court on Tuesday for its Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference opener against Edgewood College inside the R. John Buuck Field House at 7 p.m.
