MEQUON, Wis. – The Concordia Wisconsin women's basketball team battled one of the preseason favorites in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference in the NACC opener against St. Norbert. After a 45-minute delay, to ensure St. Norbert could safely arrive, the Green Knights collected the 54-44 victory to keep the best record in the NACC and improve to 5-1 and 1-0 in the NACC.
The Falcons started the scoring with a layup off an offensive rebound for senior Deidre Lassiter (Highlands Ranch, Colo.).
The Green and Gold responded with a 12-2 run to take an early eight-point lead.
The Falcons continued to chip away at the SNC lead and a layup from freshman Alexa Schwartz (Treynor, Iowa) drained a layup to cut the SNC lead to 14-12 at the end of the first quarter.
A three-point basket from sophomore Andrea Butterbrodt (Green Bay, Wis.) gave the Falcons the lead once again to start the second quarter at 15-14.
The Falcons and Green Knights kept exchanging the lead after baskets from sophomore Gracie McNabb (Grafton, Wis.), sophomore Jayden Ross (Baraboo, Wis.), and junior Kaitlyn Carothers (Columbus, Ind.).
St. Norbert connected on a pair of three-point baskets in the final 75 seconds of the half to take a 34-28 lead.
There was a total of nine lead changes in the second quarter.
The Falcons trimmed the SNC lead to six points with a fast break layup from Jayden Ross with 4:56 left in the third quarter.
St. Norbert held a 51-39 lead as the buzzer sounded on the third quarter.
The fourth quarter proved to be a defensive battle.
The Falcons went on a 5-0 run with a layup off a turnover for Gracie McNabb and a three-point basket for senior Liliana Guerra (Yorkville, Ill.).
CUW held St. Norbert to 1-9 from the field in the fourth quarter.
All nine Falcons that played on Wednesday scored in a balanced attack. Gracie McNabb and Jayden Ross both led the flock with eight points each.
Eight different Falcons grabbed a rebound against the Green Knights. Lilianna Guerra and Andrea Butterbrodt both had six rebounds.
Jayden Ross led the contest with four assists and three steals.
Concordia Wisconsin held an 11-8 advantage in second-chance points and a 7-0 margin in fastbreak points.
The Falcons look to bounce back on Saturday at Illinois Tech.
