Campos plays in state's first professional futsal match

MILWAUKEE - Former Concordia University Wisconsin midfielder Diego Campos played in the first-ever professional futsal match held in Wisconsin on Saturday night in Milwaukee. The event, which was held at Milwaukee Pius High School, featured several professional soccer players, including members of the Milwaukee Wave.

Campos (Milwaukee, Wis.) and the Wisconsin Sports Group All Stars defeated Michigan ABK by a score of 12-3 on Saturday night.

The game on Saturday served a pair of purposes. One was done so to promote the sport, but also to test the waters and see how well it would be received. The game was played in front of 2,100 fans, which could help in the Milwaukee area eventually landing a professional futsal team.

As for Campos, he hopes his play helped get him noticed to have a shot at joining a team in 2017. The PFL (Professional Futsal League) recently got a huge boost last week when Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban purchased a principal ownership.

"The Wisconsin Sports Group asked me to play in this game and it was a great opportunity," Campos said. "They said I did well and expressed interest in giving me more opportunities, hopefully those can lead to a spot on a team."

Futsal is an indoor soccer game played on a smaller court. The game is played with four field players and one goalie per team. The Wisconsin All Stars on Saturday had a total of 13 players on the roster, Campos being one of 11 field players. It is a quicker, more technical game, which requires quick thinking.

Campos recently wrapped up an impressive four-year career with the Falcons where he was a four-time All-NACC selection. In 2015 he earned NSCAA All-Central Region Second Team honors, while helping lead the Falcons to the NACC Regular Season Championship.
