Falcons hold off Dominican for road NACC victory

RIVER FOREST, Ill. – Concordia University Wisconsin overcame a hot-shooting Dominican University on Saturday to earn an 80-72 victory. The Falcons forced 21 turnovers and had four players score in double-figures during the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference matchup.

The win also moved the Falcons just a half game back of second place in the NACC standings with two games to play. CUW committed just eight turnovers and forced 21 DU errors in the game, which were converted into 29 points. The Falcons shot 47.7 percent for the game, but were able to do enough to overcome the Stars 60.7 percent shooting the final 20 minutes of play.

Juniors Brett Boettcher (New Holstein, Wis.) and Bradley Prinsen (Oostburg, Wis.) each had 14 points for CUW. Boettcher also grabbed eight rebounds and dished out a career-high-tying five assists. Prinsen tallied 12 of his points in the second half.

Sophomore Eric Kittel (Brillion, Wis.) added 13 points (three 3-pointers) and stole three passes, while junior Keith Kahlfeldt (New Berlin, Wis.) scored 11 points. Senior Mark Scholz (Greenfield, Wis.) was solid off the bench with eight points, four rebounds, three steals and two assists in 18 minutes of action. Freshman Matt Wilke (Sheboygan Falls, Wis.) stole a career-high-tying three passes.

Tim Robertson paced DU with 20 points on 8-of-15 shooting, while Rich Bodee scored 18 points in 24 minutes off the bench. Anoribe Nwannewuihe had the games only double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds, to go along with seven blocks and three assists in 25 minutes.

CUW turned a five-point deficit into a 13-point lead during a 22-4 scoring run that last nine minutes and 25 seconds. During the run Boettcher led the Falcons with five players, while seven players scored in all. The Falcons held a 38-26 advantage in the intermission and received 13 points from their bench.

The lead peaked at 21 points with 16:41 to play in the game before the Stars (2-20, 2-15 NACC) go to within seven points with 1:20 to play in the game. After Prinsen and Scholz each made a layup the game was sealed for the Falcons.
