Skip makes history; Records his 1,000th career point

With 8:07 left in Saturday's conference clash at Aurora, not only Skip Newton-Kemp hit a lay-up in the victory over the Spartans, but he forever etched his name into the Concordia men's basketball record book by becoming the 12th player to surpass 1,000 career points.
Finishing with 20 points in 35 minutes, Skip has now registered 1,003 points and is the first Falcon to eclipse the 1,000 point plateau since Josh Atkinson and David Lipanot both accomplished the feat during the 2007-08 season.
When Newton-Kemp first arrived on campus for his freshman season (2007-08), it was unclear how he might fit into Head Coach Shawn Cassidy's system. That first year Skip played in 21 games and made just one start, averaging just 4.6 points per game and roughly 10 minutes per contest.
"Skip came to Concordia as a defensive specialist, which makes this milestone truly special," said Concordia Head Coach Shawn Cassidy; now in his fourth season at the helm.
After a couple of key players were forced to miss the 2008-09 campaign, Skip elevated his game and soared to a team-high 17.0ppg average while making 24 starts in 26 game appearances. His coming out party occurred during the second game of that season, when he dropped 23 points at Silver Lake.
"He has worked extremely hard to develop himself into a complete basketball player," said Cassidy.
As a junior, Skip was named Second Team All-Northern Athletics Conference after helping lead the Falcons to their first conference title since the 2003-04 season. This season Newton-Kemp is averaging 21.4 points per game and has helped CUW get off to a red hot 7-1 start. If he continues on the pace he's at, he could wrap-up his career in the top-five all-time for Falcon scoring.
"Skip has been an outstanding team guy throughout his career," Cassidy added. "He stays positive regardless of the role he is asked to play."
