Big innings prove costly once again as Baseball drops game with Macalester

TUCSON, Ariz. – Macalester used four big innings, including an eight-run sixth inning to defeat the Concordia University Wisconsin Baseball team, 20-7, in non-conference play Tuesday. The loss was the fourth straight for CUW, all against opponents from the highly-competitive MIAC.

The Falcons held the lead after five innings thanks to a four-run fifth, making the score 7-4. Unfortunately the Scots bats started rolling with 16 runs over their final three at bats. Macalester plated eight in the sixth, five in the seventh and three in the eighth.

The CUW defense was shaky, committing four errors, although none of those led to unearned runs. The Scots ripped off 20 hits against four CUW pitchers.

The Falcons jumped out to a 2-0 lead after a two-run top of the second. Junior Kyle Hegeman (New Berlin, Wis.) roped a two-RBI double, plating Matt Schubert and Brandon Seifert (Germantown, Wis.), to push the Falcons up two.

Macalester answered right back with a four-run second but the Falcons responded with the next five runs, one in the third and four in the fifth to retake the lead, 7-4. Schubert (West Bend, Wis.) had a bases-clearing double in the fifth, while freshman Matt Luft (Oshkosh, Wis.) drove him in with a double of his own.

The rest of the game was all Macalester as they cruised to the 13-run win. The Scots belted a pair of home runs, including a grand slam off the bat of Nick Sia in the eight-run sixth. Peter Bertel added a 3-run shot in the sixth inning for the Scots.

Schubert paced the Falcons offense with three RBI and two runs scored. Seifert finished the game with a pair of hits and two runs scored, while senior Joel Sharon (Milwaukee, Wis.) added a double. Freshman Nathan Thyssen (Kimberly, Wis.) roped his fourth triple of the season and scored twice for the Falcons.

Sophomore Andrew Heideman (Bakersfield, Calif.) was the pitcher of record for CUW as he threw five innings, striking out four. Junior Tanner Seitzinger (Bridgeport, Ill.) and freshmen Eric Dubek (Lockport, Ill.) and Jack Covek (Towers Lake, Ill.) all saw action in relief for the Falcons.

Macalester (5-0) finished with five players who recorded multiple hits, including three from Quentin Stuart. Sia drove in a game-high four runs for the Scots. Brendan O'Connor picked up the win, pitching 4.1 scoreless innings in relief of starter Dylan Edwards-Gaherty.

CUW (1-5) will be off tomorrow before taking on NAIA school, Valley City State on Thursday evening. First pitch of that game is set for 7:30 pm (MST).
