Falcons compete at USTA/ITA, Gustavus Tournaments

ST. PETER, Minn. – Concordia University Wisconsin traveled to Minnesota last weekend to partake in the USTA/ITA Midwest Regional Championship and the Gustavus Fall Inviational. The tournament was for individuals and doubles, but had no effect on the team's overall record.

THE BASICS
Location: St. Peter, Minn.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- At the USTA/ITA meet, only two Falcons took part in the singles matches. Sophomore Hannah Tresedder (Kingsford, Mich.) lost her match, but it was a very intense and exciting match. Tresedder lost the first set in tiebreaker 7-6 (7-5); she then won the second set 6-3, and took her opponent into what you will probably never see again, a 19-17 tiebreaking loss in the third set.
- Frehsman Ashley Solberg (Waukesha, Wis.) made history in her first match, becoming the first CUW player to ever win a match at the USTA/ITA tournament. Solberg faced off against Hamline University's No. 1 singles player, Jordan Danielson, and won in straight sets 6-4, 6-4.
- Solberg then advanced to the next round but fell to Mikinzee Salo of St. Kate's 6-1, 6-1.
- At the Gustavus Invite, junior Michaela Wagner (Oswego, Ill.) was the only Falcon to come away with a win in the singles matches. Using the pro set scoring system, which is only one set played to eight points, Wagner defeated her opponent 8-1.
- Freshman Bailey Kelly (Racine, Wis.) was the next closest to come away with a win, falling to her opponent 8-6.
- In doubles, the dynamic duo of Tresedder and Wagner continued to shine as they were the only CUW doubles team to come away with a win at the Invite, winning their match 8-1.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- This is the third year that the Falcons have competed at the USTA/ITA Midwest Regional Championship and Gustavus Invitational.
- The three wins that CUW over the weekend most wins the team has ever come away with over the three years at the tournaments.

UP NEXT FOR CUW
- The Falcons will play host to Edgewood on Wednesday, Sept. 30 for sole possession of first place in the conference.
