Betancourt still alive at NCAA Wrestling Upper Midwest Regional

MINNEAPOLIS – Concordia Wisconsin competed hard in a very difficult NCAA Division III Upper Midwest Regional and Miguel Betancourt is the only remaining wrestler still alive. He will compete on Saturday with a chance to advance to the National Tournament a few weeks.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Concordia Wisconsin sent eight wrestlers to one of, if not the most difficult regional in the country, and junior Miguel Betancourt (El Paso, Texas) is the lone student-athlete still competing. He lost his first bout of the day by fall in 2:20 before receiving a bye and then defeating Austin Quartullo (UW-Whitewater) by medical forfeit to advance to Saturday at 149 pounds.
- Sophomore Matthew Saldana (Long Beach, Calif.) won a 6-3 decision against Landon Obra-nakata (Pacific) to begin his day at 125 pounds.
- Sophomore Ramiro Vasquez (Yuma, Ariz.) picked up a major decision 17-8 victory against Luke Wallace (St. Olaf) at 133 pounds.
- Junior Eric Martinson (Milwaukee, Wis.) earned a 9-3 decision win over Jerod Novak (St. John's) at 157 pounds.
- Sophomore Alex Montbriand (Barlett, Ill.) had a difficult 11-9 SV-1 victory against Brady Mehr (St. John's) at 165 pounds.
- Senior Mitchell Slatton (Granger, Ind.) won by fall in 50 seconds versus Benjamin Keillor (St. Olaf) at 184 pounds. He ends his career with 65 career wins, which places him in a tie for 16th in program history.
