Softball puts program-record four on NFCA All-Region Teams

LOUISVILLE – The Concordia University Wisconsin Softball team had a season to remember in 2017. The Falcons won 31 games, the second most in program history. To secure a 30-plus win season, many players have to stand out and four of those standouts were recognized Monday as All-Region selections by the NFCA.

Emily Brekke and Lexi Holsten were named Second Team All-Great Lakes Region while Carly Sobrilsky and Maddie Zazas landed Third Team honors as the organization released its eight All-Region teams. The four players set a program record for most All-Region selections in a single season, the previous most being two.

Brekke (Waterford, Wis.) proved herself as one of the top pitchers in the region, posting a 1.59 ERA over 180.1 innings of work. She struck out 152 batters, which set a CUW single-season record and her 1.59 ERA was the second lowest in program history. Brekke threw 19 complete games and posted a 19-7 record, adding five saves as well.

Holsten (Oshkosh, Wis.) finished off an impressive career with an outstanding senior season. She hit .410, collecting 55 hits and scoring 33 runs. The outfielder led the Falcons with 10 doubles and drove in 29 runs over the course of the season. She finished her career with 178 hits, just three shy of the school record (Tara Wagner).

Sobrilsky (Brookfield, Wis.) joined Holsten as a senior who posted an impressive final campaign in a Falcons uniform. The catcher led CUW with seven home runs and 43 RBIs and left the program as the all-time leading home run hitter with 26. In 2017, Sobrilsky batted .379, totaling 55 hits, 17 of those going for extra bases.

Zazas (Mundelein, Ill.) was the Falcons leadoff hitter this season, helping pace a dynamic offense. She hit .358 with a team-leading 35 runs scored. The sophomore third basemen collected 58 hits, 15 of those going for extra bases. She added 10 stolen bases and struck out just nine times in 162 at-bats.

The NACC was well-represented on the Great Lakes All-Region Teams as 13 players were selected to one of the three teams. CUW tied Benedictine with four selections, while Concordia Chicago had two and MSOE, Aurora, and Dominican all had one player selected.
