Benedictine hands Softball NACC Tournament setback

MILWAUKEE – The Concordia University Wisconsin Softball team had no answer for Benedictine's Holly Haberkorn in a NACC Tournament setback Friday afternoon. At the plate, Haberkorn hit two home runs and drove in six, while also throwing a complete game in the circle. The Falcons fell by an 8-2 score, pushing them to a 9 a.m. elimination game tomorrow against Aurora.

THE BASICS
- Final Score: Benedictine 8, CUW 2
- Location: Alverno Softball Field
- Records: Benedictine 32-10; CUW 29-11

HOW IT HAPPENED
- As was the case when these two met a week ago, the Falcons started the game slow as Benedictine scored four runs in the opening inning. The highlight for the Eagles came on a three-run home run by Haberkorn, the first of two for the Eagles four-hitter in the game.

- Despite not committing an error in the first, CUW had a couple of unfortunate miscues. The leadoff batter for Benedictine, Kassee Johnson, hit a foul ball in play on the left side. The Falcons gave chase but ran into the third base umpire, resulting in the ball to drop. Johnson would later reach on a walk and the next batter reached when CUW tried to go to second on a sacrifice bunt, rather than taking the sure out at first.

- Jamie Reiser (Ingleside, Ill.) did her best to answer the Eagles first inning with a solo home run to lead off the top of the second. The roundtripper was the fifth of the season for Reiser.

- Haberkorn struck again for the Eagles in the bottom of the third with her second home run of the contest. She would add a two-RBI single in the fourth inning, finishing the game 3-for-4 with six RBIs. She went the distance in the circle, surrendering just three hits.

- Emily Brekke (Waterford, Wis.) took the loss for the Falcons, throwing four innings. She struck out one. Molly O'Connell (New London, Wis.) worked two scoreless innings in relief for the Falcons, striking out one as well.

- Reiser had the lone extra-base hit for the Falcons, the sole home run in the second. Deidra Weinberger (Mayville, Wis.) added a RBI single in the sixth, plating O'Connell.

UP NEXT
- The Falcons will take on Aurora in an elimination game tomorrow at 9 a.m. The winner of that contest will move on to face Benedictine at 11 a.m. and need to beat them twice in order to capture a NACC Tournament Championship.
