ALEXANDRA TOMICH POSTGAME
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Freshman Alexandra Tomich (Mission Viejo, Calif.) scored the game-winning goal for the Falcons just 36 seconds into the second half. Tomich took advantage of a Marian turnover and tallied the breakaway goal for the 2-1 lead, which would hold for the remainder of the contest.
- Despite no goals scored in the final 44 minutes, there was plenty of excitement with great opportunities each way. The Falcons were able to get a clean sheet from Tabitha Ortiz (Plainfield, Ill.) in the second half as she made five saves to allow the Falcons to advance. Oritz added three first-half stops for an eight-save match.
- Fifth-seeded Marian struck first on Sunday as Shannon Coughlin scored from nearly 30 yards out in the 10th minute. Coughlin got a pass from Melissa McBridge and floated it over Ortiz with a perfect shot placement for a 1-0 Sabres lead.
- The Falcons were able to respond in the 20th minute when Kayla Schlosser (Germantown, Wis.) buried her team-leading 12th goal of the season. CUW took advantage of a corner kick as Anna Knueppel (Germantown, Wis.) placed one perfectly to Schlosser for the equalizer.
- Both teams had plenty of chances as shots ended up 21-18 in favor of the Falcons. CUW had one more shot on goal, while both teams had six corner kicks.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- The NACC Tournament win was the first for CUW since the 2014 season. CUW reached the NACC Tournament finals in 2014 after winning a semifinal contest at home against Edgewood.
- Tomich now has four goals in her last two matches after not having a collegiate score in her first 17 contests. The freshman is certainly heating up at the right time for CUW.
UP NEXT
