Men’s Lacrosse Crushes Marian and Multiple Program Records

MEQUON, Wis. - As a team, the CUW men's lacrosse team set four single-game program records in their 28-9 win over the Sabres of Marian, while senior Parker Beaudry (Sherwood Park, Alta.) rewrote the record book as he scored 10 goals in the contest, breaking the record previously set by Marino Best in 2016.

The first record to fall on Monday was the number of goals in a single game, as CUW found the back of the net 28 times, edging out the record the previous record of 27 that stood since the 2012 season.

Similarly, the assists record for a single game also fell, as the Blue and White recorded 22 assists on their 28 goals, as the previous record was 18, which had been done on four separate occasions throughout program history.

Together, freshman Jaxon Hill (Bismarck, N.D.) and sophomore Frank Trewyn (Mukwonago, Wis.) went a combined 36-41 in the faceoff, which resulted in the faceoffs won record falling. The underclassmen duo combined to shatter the previous record of 30, a mark set last year, also against Marian.

Twi individual season records were broken with Max Esposito breaking the record for points in a season and Jaxon Hill broke the record for ground balls in a season.

Hill and Trewyn also led CUW in ground balls, with Hill having 16 and Trewyn having 13.

Finally, Concordia Wisconsin also broke the groundballs in a single game record as they scooped up 71 throughout the game, breaking the 2022 record of 66.

With the victory, the Falcons move to 9-4 overall and 4-1 in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) play.

In the first quarter, CUW took a quick, convincing 7-2 lead as junior Gio Nowotarski (Reading, Pa.), on a pass from junior Max Esposito (Gaithersburg, Md.), netted Concordia's first goal.

In a three-minute span, senior Parker Beaudry rattled off three straight goals as freshman Tyler Husby (Eagan, Minn.), Gio Nowotarski, and Max Esposito assisted on those goals.

Meanwhile, the last 2:46 of the first quarter saw CUW extend its lead. Gio Nowotarski and senior Caleb Ruger (Grafton, Wis.) both scored unassisted goals, while Parker Beaudry scored with 20 seconds left in the quarter, as Max Esposito recorded another assist.

CUW's offensive prowess was once again on full display in the second quarter, as Caleb Ruger found an open Parker Beaudry for the score. Beaudry would tack on another goal with 9:36 remaining.

13 seconds later, sophomore Connor Quill (Schaumburg, Ill.) snuck a shot past the Marian goalie to put CUW into double digits, while Frank Trewyn was credited with the assist.

The scoring barrage persisted as nine seconds after Quill's goal, Parker Beaudry continued his excellent performance and scored another goal, this time, on a beautiful feed from Jaxon Hill

The final four goals for Concordia came from junior Griffin Bahr (Grand Rapids, Minn.) with 7:49 left, Parker Beaudry with 7:04 remaining, while the final goals came with less than 90 seconds before halftime, as Gio Nowotarski had the unassisted goal, while Max Esposito scored his first goal of the day, as senior Matthew Sierzega (Grayslake, Ill.) assisted on Espito's point with eight seconds left in the half to earn CUW the 15-3 lead.

Out of the break, the Falcons continued to apply pressure to Marian's defense. Parker Beaudry scored just 42 seconds into the third, while Max Esposito scored back-to-back goals at the 11:31 and 11:01 marks on assists from Caleb Ruger and Gio Nowotarski

The next Blue and White goal came from Caleb Ruger at the 8:53 mark, while the next goal, with 7:13 remaining, saw freshman Bryce Petersen (Waukesha, Wis.) and Gio Nowotarski connect to capitalize on the man-up opportunity.

With 5:04 left in the third, senior Liam McGarva (Fort Saskatchewan, Alta.) assisted on a goal from Tyler Husby, before he scored back-to-back goals, as freshman Jaxon Niemeyer (Tinley Park, Ill.) had an assist, while Husby returned the favor on the second goal as CUW earned a 23-6 with 15 minutes to go in the contest.

The men's lacrosse squad remained determined to break the goal record as they scored five goals in the final frame, with the first coming from senior Flynn Spano (St. Louis Park, Minn.) with help from Bryce Petersen, just 56 seconds in.

With 12:29 left, Jaxon Niemeyer joined the party as he scored on the tough unassisted shot across his body.

After recording two assists in the game, Bryce Petersen on a pass from Flynn Spano, tallied his first goal the day to put CUW within one of the previous goal record, as the score sat at 26-6.

History was then made with 9:50 remaining, as Parker Beaudry, on a pass from Esposito, scored the incredible behind-the-back goal to earn himself the CUW men's lacrosse record for most goals in a single contest. As a result, Beaudry became the first Falcon ever to score double-digit goals in a single contest, netting his 10th of the day.

75 seconds after Beaudry's goal, Jaxon Niemeyer registered his second unassisted goal of the day as his shot claimed the record for most goals scored in a single at 28.

In total, 11 different Falcons scored goals and recorded assists, with Max Esposito having a game-high seven assists.

Although the offense shined throughout the contest, CUW's defense forced 21 turnovers as Gio Nowotarski and sophomore Oliver Roa (Dunlap, Ill.) had three caused turnovers, while junior Michael Lange (Brookfield, Wis.), senior Isaac Ober (Huntley, Ill.), and junior Zach Wilder (Midland, Mich.) all had two caused turnovers to their name.

Between the pipes, freshman Travis Marquardt improved to 9-3 on the season, as he recorded two saves. Also with two saves was freshman Braden Moseley (Buffalo, Minn.), and junior Justin Kopp (Rochester, Minn.).

The Falcons will look to carry their momentum over to Wednesday, as they will take a quick break from NACC action to travel to Iowa to take on the formidable Spartans of Dubuque under the lights at 7 p.m. CDT.
