Men’s Hockey upsets No. 9 Salve Regina for bronze medal

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Falcons are riding momentum out of New York with a 2-0 victory in a shootout over the No. 9-ranked Seahawks of Salve Regina to take third place at the PathFinder Bank Hockey Classic. The game officially ended in a 4-4 tie and moves CUW to 3-10-2 on the year.

"Very simply everyone did their job and played their role," said head coach Jasen Wise. "When that happens, we can play with any team in the country. The special teams were both dialed in as well."

Junior Josh Adkins (Victoria, B.C.) broke open the scoring on the power play in the first period. Sophomore Nick Guiney (Victoria, B.C.) and senior Taylor Gauld (Whitby, Ont.) were credited with the assists.

Nine minutes later, freshman Brandon MacKinnon (Etobicoke, Ont.) put the Falcons up 2-0.

The Seahawks scored on the power play to cut the lead in half.

The Salve Regina power play goal snapped a streak of 25 penalties killed off by the CUW defense.

The power play pushed the Falcons forward in the second period when Nick Guiney lit the lamp.

After a Seahawks goal, the CUW power play found the back of the net again. This time, sophomore Nick Guerra (Victoria, B.C.) found the back of the net. Nick Guiney and sophomore Braydon Barker (Red Deer, Alta.) had the assists.

CUW scored three power play goals on Saturday, which is the third most in program history. The last time that the Falcons scored three power play goals was on Feb. 7, 2012 at Northland.

Salve Regina tied the game with two third-period goals.

Neither team was able to score in overtime and the game officially ended as a tie.

Senior Stefen Seel (Invermere, B.C.) opened the shootout with a goal through the goalie's legs.

Freshman Bo Didur (West Vancouver, B.C.) was a wall for the Falcons in the shootout with two stops. Didur ended the game with 30 saves.

Nick Guerra clinched the shootout with a top-shelf shot that sent the water bottle on top of the net flying.

Salve Regina outshot the Falcons on Saturday, 34-29.

Nick Guiney led the Falcons with three points, on one goal and two assists.

CUW is now 1-2-1 against ranked teams this year, with all four games being decided by a goal or less.

The Falcons will return home on Friday when they host St. Scholastica.
