Men’s Hockey chops Northland in overtime

MEQUON, Wis. – The Falcons pushed the unbeaten streak to three games with a thrilling overtime victory on Saturday afternoon against Northland. The CUW men's hockey team won 4-3 to improve to 5-10-2 on the year and to 3-1-1 in the last five games. The win also gives CUW two points in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association a 3-6-1 and pushes the Falcons to fifth place in the South Division, past Trine. Northland entered the day leading the NCHA North and falls to 7-8-2 and 5-3-2 in NCHA action.

"This was a big weekend for the boys," said head coach Jasen Wise. "We needed four points and they found a way to get it done. Nothing comes easy in this conference and you have to earn every goal and every win. They stuck together tonight and got the job done. I am proud of the way that we finished both games. We had focus and grit when it counted most."

The Jacks jumped on the scoreboard first with a shorthanded goal in the first period.

CUW opened the second period with three-straight goals to take the lead.

Freshman Brandon MacKinnon (Etobicoke, Ont.) started the scoring with a goal in front of the goal on the power play. Freshman Cory Dennis (Madison, Wis.) and junior Josh Adkins (Victoria, B.C.) had the assists.

Sophomore Nick Guiney (Victoria, B.C.) deflected a shot from junior Jake Switzer (Swansea, Ill.) in the back of the net to take the lead.

Junior Jim Pearson (Ashton, Ont.) added the third goal for the Falcons past the goalies' right side.

The Jacks tied the game with a goal in the final minute of the second period and a late third-period goal.

The Falcon power play made Northland pay in overtime. Jacob Jeske went to the penalty box in the first minute of overtime.

Senior Adam Fauchoux (Prince Albert, Sask.) sliced the puck past the goalie off passes from senior Taylor Gauld (Whitby, Ont.) and Nick Guiney to secure the victory.

Cory Dennis, Adam Fauchoux and Nick Guiney all had multi-point nights. Dennis finished with two assists, while Fauchoux and Guiney both finished with a goal and an assist.

In a night where 122 total shots were taken, freshman Bo Didur (West Vancouver, B.C.) kept the Falcons in the game and finished with 35 saves.

The Falcons outshot Northland, 45-35. Josh Adkins led the Falcons with six shots.

The 45 shots were the second highest of the season, with CUW having 52 against Finlandia.

The CUW defense killed off all three Northland power plays. The Falcons have posted a perfect penalty kill nine different times this year.

The Blue and White were also able to maintain possession against the Jacks, winning 39 of the 68 faceoffs, senior Stefen Seel (Invermere, B.C.) led CUW with 11 faceoff victories.

Concordia Wisconsin looks to continue the winning streak on the road next weekend at Trine and Adrian.
