Falcons Fall to Macalester

TUCSON, Ariz - On Saturday afternoon, the Concordia Wisconsin baseball team took on the Scots from Macalester College. The Scots came away with the 19-11 victory and improved to 6-6, while the Falcons moved to 7-5.

The Falcons took a 3-0 lead in the first inning after Sean Tillmon (Plainfield, Ill.) hit an RBI double, scoring fellow senior Johannes Haakenson (Janesville, Wis.), who hit a single to lead off the inning. Freshman Matt Miller (Fredonia, Wis.) added to the lead with a 2-RBI single, scoring seniors Daniel Hahn (Cudahy, Wis.) and Sean Tillmon.

Macalester responded with five runs in the top of the second off a couple of hits, including a 2-RBI double and a pair of Concordia.

The Falcons were unable to respond in their half of the inning, giving Macalester the 5-3 lead heading into the top of the third inning.

Macalester added their lead off a two-run home run, giving the Scots a 7-3 lead.

CUW responded with four runs in their half of the inning, tying the game 7-7. Senior Tristan Largent (Verona, Wis.) scored junior Jimmy Juergensen (Cedarburg, Wis.) and an RBI double to right-center field. Sophomore Kyle Flynn (Nashville, Tenn.) cut the Macalester lead with an RBI single through the right side, scoring Largent. Later in the inning, with bases loaded, Daniel Hahn tied the game with a 2-RBI single up the middle.

In the top of the fourth inning, the Scots responded and retook the lead with five runs courtesy of a CUW error, a pair of RBI singles, and a bases-loaded walk, giving them the 12-7 lead. 

Concordia was able to scratch one run in the bottom of the fourth when Tristan Largent hit an RBI single to center field, cutting the Macalester to 12-8.

Macalester continued to put runs on the board in the fifth inning. The Scots added three runs courtesy of a 2-RBI single and an RBI single, extending their lead to 15-8. 

The Falcons responded in the fifth with three runs of their own. Senior Dillan Fike (Oak Lawn, Ill.) led off the inning with a single, while Kyle Flynn reached first on a fielding error by the Macalester second baseman. Johannes Haakenson scored both Fike and Flynn on a 2-RBI triple. Daniel Hahn had a sacrifice fly RBI to score Haakenson in the next at-bat. 

After the fifth inning, the Falcons cut the Macalester lead to 15-11.

Following the fifth inning, the Falcons were unable to score for the rest of the game while Macalester added five more runs, giving them the 19-11 win. 

Daniel Hahn led the Falcons with four hits and three RBIs. Jimmy Juergensen, Matt Miller, and Dillan Fike added three hits, while Johannes Haakenson, Matt Miller, and Tristan Largent added two RBIs. Sophomore Matthew Ward (East Dundee, Ill.) and senior Beau Wills (Coal City, Ill) both struck out three Macalester batters.

Concordia Wisconsin will look to bounce back as they complete their Arizona action on Sunday, March 19th, versus the St. John's Johnnies at 11:00 AM MST.
