No. 10 Trinity Rallies to Spoil Season Opener

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Concordia Wisconsin baseball team opened the season in a thrilling back-and-forth contest with one of the best teams in the nation. The 10th-ranked Tigers took round one of the weekend to improve to 6-4 and send CUW to 0-1.

The Falcons struck first on Friday in the first inning when senior Johannes Haakenson (Janesville, Wis.) scored on a passed ball.

The Tigers tied the game in the first inning on an error and took the lead in the second inning on a ground out to second base.

Sophomore Kyle Flynn (Nashville, Tenn.) tied the game in the sixth inning with a double to right field that scored senior Cole Aguirre (Chino Hills, Calif.) from second base. Flynn gave the birds the lead when he scored on a wild pitch.

The Maroon and White retook the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly and a double into the gap in left-center field.

The Falcons leveled the game in the seventh when senior Tristan Largent (Verona, Wis.) doubled into the gap in left field after getting down in the count, 0-2. The double, scored junior Jimmy Juergensen (Cedarburg, Wis.) after Juergensen started the inning with a triple to right field.

The Blue and White once retook the lead in the top of the eighth inning when senior Sean Tillmon (Plainfield, Ill.) sent the ball to right field on a single that scored Johannes Haakenson.

The Tigers took back the lead with three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to secure the victory.

Senior Dillan Fike (Oak Lawn, Ill.) started the ninth inning with a walk and an error brought the game-tying runner to the plate, but the Tigers were able to get out of the jam to secure the victory.

The Concordia defense left eight Tigers in scoring position on Friday night.

Jimmy Juergensen led the flock with two hits on Friday.

Senior Ryan Green (Green Bay, Wis.) only allowed one walk and finished with three strikeouts in the start.

The two teams will go at it again for round two on Saturday.
