CUW women's volleyball team took down Muskies of Lakeland in a five-set thriller on Oct. 27 to claim the NACC regular season title.
The first set was a back-and-forth affair, as neither team could build a significant lead. Concordia took the 24-23 lead but could not capitalize as Lakeland rallied and took the first set, 28-26.
Lakeland jumped to a quick 7-3 lead in the second set. CUW then quickly responded and went on a 5-0 run, taking the 8-7 lead behind the serves of Emma Essex (Hoffman Estates, Ill.). The second set went long again, but it was the Falcons who came out on top with a 26-24 victory, which was capped off with a service ace from Emma Essex.
CUW rode their momentum in the third set and went on a 4-0 run to finish the set and take the 25-22 victory, giving the Falcons the 2-1 set lead. Junior Maycee Karpfinger (Wauwtsa, Wis.) had three kills in that run.
The Falcons and Muskies went past 25 points again in the fourth set. Lakeland pushed the lead to 24-20 before CUW tied the game at 24 a piece with a kill from senior Jenna Chaussee (Chilton, Wis.). The Muskies took the following two points, taking the fourth set, 26-24, forcing the fifth set.
The fifth set was all CUW as the Falcons jumped to a quick 5-1 lead following a kill from senior Gabriella Kaebisch (Paddock Lake, Wis.), while a kill from senior Sophia Collins (Lake Mills, Wis.) gave the Falcons the 15-11 victory.
With the win, the Falcons claimed a share of the NACC regular season title, their sixth title in program history, joining the 2010, 2016, 2017, 2019, and 2020 teams.
