Mount Union shuts down Falcons

ALLIANCE, Ohio – Undefeated University of Mount Union was too powerful on Saturday afternoon during a 21-7 non-conference victory over Concordia University Wisconsin. The Purple Raiders scored nine unanswered goals in the second half to put the game out of reach.

CUW went and back-and-forth with Mount Union and was tied early at 2-2, but the Purple Raiders began to pull away by scoring 10 of the next 14 goals to lead 12-6 at the intermission. The hosts took control as the game progressed and shut down the Falcons offensive attack.

Mount Union (14-0) ended with a commanding 44-9 shots advantage (35-9 on goal), won 23-of-30 draw controls and forced 20 turnovers of which 11 were caused. The 21 goals were the most allowed by CUW since dropping a 23-4 decision at Augustana on March 27, 2013.

Senior Rebecca David (Oregon, Wis.) made 14 saves in goal, which was the second double-figure save performance of the season for her. Defensively, four different Falcons caused a turnover, while David and junior Sabrina Boehlke (Random Lake, Wis.) each picked up two ground balls. Freshman Allison Kurek (Chicago, Ill.) caused a turnover and is now one shy of tying the program's single season record which was set by senior Hayley Peppers (Franktown, Colo.) last season. The Falcons caused four turnovers and are now one shy of tying the single season record set last year.

On the offensive end of the field it was Kurek and senior Steph Barry (Gurnee, Ill.) who each score twice. Freshman Amanda McKay (Portland, Ore.) assisted on a pair of scores, and Kurek and Peppers each won two draw controls.

Katherine Doraty led Mount Union with six goals and three assists, while Taylor Pensyl and Susie Kraus each had a hat trick. Katie Elder won a game-best eight draw controls and Kolbie Haines caused a game-high four turnovers.

CUW (8-6) continues it four-game road trip on Tuesday at North Central College at 7 pm.
