Women's Lacrosse shuts down Alma in road victory

ALMA, Mich. – Concordia University Wisconsin scored less than 30 seconds into the non-conference game on Saturday afternoon and rolled to a commanding 16-5 victory over Alma College at Bahlke Field.

The Falcons took advantage of the Scots errors by scoring six free-position goals and a program record four woman-up markers. Alma was whistled for nine yellow cards and turned the ball over 24 times in a game that had temperatures a few degrees above freezing.

CUW began the game by scoring five unanswered goals before Alma found the back of the net. Both teams then went back and forth for the next 17 minutes, and the Scots got to within 8-5 on the scoreboard. The Falcons then unleashed an offensive attack that had them turn a three-goal lead into an 11-goal win after scoring eight unanswered over the last 22:50.

Junior Jenna Brown (Roseville, Minn.) shined on free-position attempts, by scoring a program-tying three, which was also a career high for goals. Freshman Allison Kurek (Chicago, Ill.) also recorded a hat trick, while four other Falcons marked the back of the net twice. In all, eight Falcons recorded at least a goal in their second-straight victory.

Senior Hayley Peppers (Franktown, Colo.) and Kurek each picked up a game-high-tying five ground balls, while Kurek won three draw controls. In goal, sophomore Veronika Metanova (Palatine, Ill.) made four saves in a complete game effort for her first win of the season.

CUW (3-3) outshot Alma 31-18, including 23-9 on goal, and cleared 8-of-12 attempts.

Tracy Gallihugh finished with a hat trick for the Scots (1-7) and led the team with three ground balls. Darby Kahler and Sydney Bryce each won three draw controls. Alma finished the game 0-of-4 on free-position attempts.

The Falcons return to Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference play on Sunday with a 1 pm matchup at Benedictine University.
