Falcons shutout Eagles in road MWLC contest

LISLE, Ill. – Concordia University Wisconsin controlled Benedictine University on Sunday afternoon during a 13-0 Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference victory. The victory was the first shutout in program history for the Falcons.

CUW was dominant on both ends of the field, as they outshot Benedictine 32-5 (23-4 on goal) and forced 27 turnovers of which 20 were caused. The Falcons ended one caused turnover shy of tying the program record. As has been the case all season, they again had a balanced attack with seven different players finding the back of the net.

Senior Emily Heckendorf (Merrill, Wis.) and Hannah Redden (Libertyville, Ill.) each recorded a hat trick, while seniors Steph Barry (Gurnee, Ill.) and Hayley Peppers (Franktown, Colo.) scored two goals apiece. Senior Sammi Reiter (Stillwater, Minn.) led all players with two assists.

Freshman Allison Kurek (Chicago, Ill.) tied the program record with five caused turnovers and was one ground ball shy of tying the program record, as was Peppers. Freshman Amanda McKay led all players with four draw control wins and Peppers won three herself, to go along with three caused turnovers.

In goal, senior Rebecca David (Oregon, Wis.) made four saves in a complete game effort and becomes the first goalkeeper in program history to record a shutout.

The Eagles' Kam Haifleigh led the team with five ground balls and Becca Gullett picked up four ground balls. Niveen Salah and Gabby Rowe each forced two turnovers. Hannah Smith made 10 saves between the pipes.

CUW ended the win with a decisive 13-2 lead in draw control wins, held a 26-14 advantage in ground balls and cleared 16-of-17 attempts, while holding Benedictine to 12-of-26 on clear opportunities. The Falcons were also 2-of-6 on free-position attempts.

CUW (4-3, 2-0 MWLC) has won three games in a row and next hosts Aurora University on Tuesday at 4 pm at Fitting Field.
