Women's Hockey celebrates 2017-18 season
MEQUON, Wis. – The Concordia University Wisconsin Women's Hockey team celebrated its 2017-18 season this past weekend with a postseason banquet. The Falcons handed out awards for the past year, along with celebrating the winningest senior class in program history.
The Falcons finished the year with a 12-13-2 record, including a 10-7-1 mark in NCHA play. CUW advanced to the Slaats Cup Playoffs for the first time since the 2014-15 season after finishing fourth in the league standings.
CUW celebrated the careers of Chloe Bachman, Amanda Curtin, and Lexi Holman at the banquet as well. Holman received All-NCHA honors this past season, her second All-Conference selection. She was the first player in program history to receive All-NCHA honors twice, also landing on the team her sophomore season.
The Falcons also had eight players earn NCHA All-Academic honors this past season: Holman, Kaitlynn Lloyd, Christina Pattengale, Breanna Thomson, Ellie Woodman, Madi Chapman, Bachman, and Issy Bilton.
Below are the awards that were handed out at the postseason banquet:
Team MVP: Thomson (St. Marys, Ontario) landed Team MVP honors after an impressive season at goaltender. The sophomore posted a .942 save percentage and a 1.74 goals against average in 15 starts. Thomson added four shutouts throughout the season and finished the year with eight wins.
Offensive Player of the Year: Holman (Sauk Rapids, Minn.) tied for the team lead with 26 points and led the Falcons with 14 goals in her final season on the ice. The senior added 12 assists in 2017-18. Holman scored six power-play goals, along with one shorthanded and one empty-net score.
Defensive Player of the Year: Woodman (Janesville, Wis.) skated in 26 games for the Falcons as the team's top blueliner. Woodman finished the year with 11 points and posted a +2 plus/minus rating for the Falcons. She helped bolster a defense that posted five shutouts throughout the year.
Unsung Hero (Awarded to the player who made significant contributions to the success of the team but may not have necessarily received the credit they deserved in the public eye): Bachman (St. Peter, Minn.) served as an assistant captain in 2017-18 and skated in all 27 games. Bachman produced nine points. The senior recorded a hat trick on Senior Day in a win over Trine.
Rookie of the Year: Ally Hull (Wasilla, Alaska) skated in all 27 games during her rookie season with the Falcons. The freshman scored three goals and added three assists in her first year with the team, including a game-winning goal in a 1-0 win over Finlandia.
Iron Falcon (Awarded to the player who came in first for the Falcons strength and conditioning test at the start of the year) – Bachman. Bachman's hard work in the offseason paid off as she skated in all 27 games for the Falcons this season. It was the second straight Iron Falcon award for the senior.
