Welcome to a new year! With the beginning of new years comes excitement; the chance to start over, to do better, to be conference champions, the list goes on. Although it was a rough start to 2018 for the women's hockey team, starting the year with two tough losses against Bethel University. Luckily for your Falcons, these games were non-conference match ups. It was a chance for us to oil our chains and tighten up any loose screws that may have been loosened over our 2-week break. Even though we all hit the gym over the break… sometimes it takes a little longer to get back into the roll of things than usual. Saying this, there are some good things to come from the first weekend back for the women's hockey team. Lexi Holman, our captain for the second season in a row, is just one goal away from tying the current record of 36 goals in a career. With 10 more conference games to go, who knows just how high Lexi will set the bar for future Falcons to break!
Speaking of Lexi, let's see what she has to say about the start of the season for her falcons. I asked her a few questions about the future for her and the team, and what she expects the season to turn out like.
Q: Do you think the first games of the year will determine the fate of games in the future?
A: I believe that how we played the second game against Lake Forest is an indicator of how we will play the second part of the season.
Q: Now that we are halfway through the year, how would you describe your experience with the team thus far?
A: I love our team! We are all very close and I feel as though I have gotten along and had great experiences with every person on our team!
Q: How does it feel to be just one goal away from tying the current record of 36 goals in a career?
A: I'm extremely excited, but I would not be in this position without the girls standing beside me. I'm hoping to break the record when I'm in Minnesota so that my whole family will be able to see
Q: What do you think the team's mentality should be going forward in the season?
A: Our mentality should be that we need to win every single game. Every game is a playoff game from here on out.
Q: CUW has never had home ice due to placing top three in conference, what would this mean to you and your team? Do you think it would be beneficial to host instead of travelling?
A: I would love to have a home playoff game for my senior year. We have only made playoffs one time during my four years, so to have a home playoff game would mean a lot. Being able to prepare on your home ice and not having to travel to a game could play a part in the game, but I feel if we had to travel we would play just as well as we would on our own ice!
Looks like Lexi is very eager to officially start the season with the upcoming games against St. Scholastica, as is the rest of the team. The upcoming six-hour journey will be worth the drive if the team can bring home four points from the weekend of the 19th.
