Marian Outlasts ACHA

FOND DU LAC, Wis. – Thursday night saw the CUW ACHA team fall to the Sabres of Marian University 5-3 to drop to 9-4-1 overall and 1-1-1 in Northern Collegiate Hockey League (NCHL) play.

Marian struck first, taking the 1-0 lead with 5:04 remaining in the first period. Less than two minutes later, the Sabres again found the back of the net to enjoy a 2-0 lead heading into the first intermission.

Freshman Jaxon Hill (Bismarck, N.D.) put the Falcons on the scoreboard early in the second period as Hill ripped the one-timer past the Marian goaltender off a pass from freshman Chuck Emme (Glenview, Ill.) just 5:24 into the second period to cut the Sabres' lead to 2-1.

CUW would knot the game at 2-2 with 7:10 left in the period as Chuck Emme found the open senior Ian Malcolmson (Waukesha, Wis.) just outside the crease. Malcolmson then found Emme, who tapped in the puck to beat the Marian goaltender.

But the Sabres would respond with two goals late in the second period, scoring one with 2:34 left and one with just seconds remaining to go up 4-2 heading into the third period.

Determined not to go away, the Falcons were first to score in the third period as Ian Malcolmson found senior Brandon Ballweg (Woodbridge, Va.) open on the opposite side of the ice. With the puck at his stick and quickly approaching the goal, Ballweg slid the puck over to senior Trenton Sherman (Farmington, Minn.) on the 2-on-1 break. With no one in front of him, Sherman fired the puck past the goaltender to cut Marian's lead to 4-3 with 12:58 remaining in the game.

Less than a minute later, the Sabres mounted a response, finding the back of the net to reestablish their two-goal lead.

Despite CUW's best efforts to make a comeback, Marian would secure the 5-3 win.

In the loss, CUW senior goaltender Vincent Falcone (Elgin, Ill.) recorded 25 saves.

Concordia Wisconsin's ACHA team will look to get their revenge tomorrow, Nov. 16th, as they return to the Ozaukee Ice Center to host Marian for a 3:30 p.m. puck drop.
