2010-11 Concordia Wrestling Preview

Mequon

The Concordia wrestling team will look to improve on the team's 3rd place finish in conference last season, and will have a nice mix of upperclassmen and freshman to accomplish this mission. The Falcons last had a national qualifier in 2009, and their last conference title was in 2006. Hard work leading up to the season may help get to a higher level of success.

"This team has been working hard in the pre-season, more than in previous years," commented Head Coach Bret Corner. "This is a positive, hard-working group and we have been having some of the best workouts we have seen in the practice room in years. It has been great so far."

Returners that will lead the team include Marcus Lubner (So., Ozaukee HS, WI) who will move up to 133 after winning conference in 2010 at 125. Kurt Kemnitz (Jr., West Allis Hale HS, WI) will move down to 125 after going 19-21 last season at 133. David Tuomi (So., Walther Lutheran HS, IL) will move up to 149, after splitting time at 141 & 149 last season. The lone senior Josh Nord (Oconomowoc, WI) will look to improve on a 18-20 season by moving down a weight class to 165.

"Tuomi has worked hard in the weight room in the off-season, and looks better than ever in the early season practices. Nord will be tough to beat at 165. With the switch of Kemnitz & Lubner, we will be strong in the lower weights. Plus, we have freshman that are pushing the returners."

The recruiting class includes state placers in Dustin Bushouse (Berrien Springs, MI), Alec Silva (El Paso Hanks, TX), and Miles Greenblatt (St. Michael HS, LA).

The success of the Falcon wrestling team will depend on the development of these and the rest of the freshman class throughout the season.

CUW opens the season with a home non-conference dual on Friday, November 19 vs. Triton College at 6:00pm. Then Concordia hosts the 18th annual Concordia Wrestling Open on Saturday, November 20. The 25-team tournament begins at 9:00am with the finals slated for 6:00pm.
