Women's Hockey edged by Marian

MEQUON, Wis. – The Concordia University Wisconsin Women's Hockey team was edged by Marian, 2-1, in an NCHA matchup Saturday afternoon at the Ozaukee Ice Center. The loss moves the Falcons into a tie for fourth in the NCHA standings with the Sabres, but Marian also gained any such tiebreaker scenario with the win Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Each team scored once in the first period with the Sabres taking a 1-0 lead with 5:02 left before the first intermission. Sarah Bier lit the lamp for Marian, assisted by Sheila Blower.

- The Falcons responded less than three minutes later with the second goal of the season from freshman Issy Bilton (Burlington, Ontario). Her equalizer was assisted by sophomores Emily Kuhlman (Cold Springs, Minn.) and Jossa Danis (Brandon, Manitoba).

- CUW was whistled for a four-minute double minor late in the first period and that helped lead to a Sabres goal early in the second. The Falcons nearly killed off the four-minute penalty, but the Sabres struck with 15 seconds left on the power play for the game-winner. Rian Lennon tallied the goal for Marian.

- CUW struggled to get anything going offensively in the first 40 minutes, generating just eight shots on goal during that time span. The Falcons picked things up in the third with 10 shots, but the Sabres Lindsey Strainis turned them all away. Marian finished the game with a 21-18 edge in shots.

- Sophomore Christina Pattengale (Portage, Mich.) put forth another strong effort between the pipes for CUW. She finished with 19 saves.

- Marian's lone power play goal proved to be the difference. The Sabres finished the game 1-for-7 with the advantage, while CUW was 0-for-4.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- The Falcons have just two games left in NCHA play, while the Sabres have four remaining. CUW will likely need two wins next weekend plus some help to qualify for the NCHA Tournament.

- The Falcons will play at St. Scholastica for a pair of NCHA tilts next weekend. The opener is set for Friday night at 7 p.m.
