Softball splits doubleheader with Benedictine
Box Score (Game 1): BenU 6, CUW 0
Box Score (Game 2): CUW 4, BenU 1
LISLE, Ill. -- After being shutout 6-0
in the first game of Sunday's Northern Athletics Conference
doubleheader at Benedictine University, the Concordia University
Wisconsin softball team came back to earn a split of the
day's proceedings with a 4-1 win.
Mariah Giesseman and Holly Zinnecker led the Falcons at the plate
with two hits apiece, while Danielle Burke earned a complete game,
three strikeout victory in the circle. CUW finished its four-game
NAC weekend road trip with three victories after sweeping Concordia
University Chicago on Saturday.
Game One Recap:
CUW managed only three hits in the opener, as All-NAC hurler
Brittany Adcox allowed just four Falcon base runners in seven
innings of work.
BenU got all the runs needed in the first inning, when
they produced three hits and a pair of scores.
Senior pitcher Sheri Weidner (Mount Prospect, Ill.)
allowed just one Eagle run over the final three innings. Giesseman
(sophomore, Sturgeon Bay, Wis.) had two of the Falcon hits.
Game Two Recap:
CUW broke open a scoreless duel between winner Burke
(senior, Burlington, Wis.) and BenU's Eryn Pondo with a three-run
third. Senior Sarah Cochran's (Bloomington, Ill.) two-run double
was the big hit of the frame.
BenU got one run back in the fourth, but CUW tallied the game's
final marker without the help of a base hit in the fifth. Cochran's
grounder gave her three RBI for the game, as junior Jannelle
Schroder (Colgate, Wis.) crossed the plate. That was more than
enough Burke as she held the hosts to four singles and did not walk
a batter.
CUW improved to 5-1 in the NAC, while dropping the Eagles to 3-1 in
league play. Next up for CUW is a doubleheader at
Marian University on Tuesday evening.
