Firebirds Surge to Sink Men's Soccer

KENOSHA, Wis. – The Concordia Wisconsin men's soccer team fell short on a hot Sunday night at Carthage. The Firebirds used a second-half surge to claim the 3-2 victory and send the Falcons to 1-1-0 on the young season.

The Firebirds first found the back of the net on a rebound off a shot that bounced off a pair of Falcons in the eighth minute.

Senior Ivan Cuellar (Milwaukee, Wis.) leveled the match in the 29th minute when he danced through four Carthage defenders to create a clear path to the net and scored from 15 yards out.

The Firebirds had a handful of quality opportunities late in the first half but sophomore Jeremy Munoz (Milwaukee, Wis.) and the Concordia defense were able to weather the storm.

Carthage opened the second half with another excellent opportunity with a breakaway down the right side, but the iron was kind to the Falcons and the ball clanked off the post and the rebound soared out of play.

The Firebirds continued to pepper the Concordia net and had a man advantage for the final 20 minutes of the match.

Carthage took advantage of the situation and reclaimed the lead in the 73rd minute with a header off a corner play.

The Falcons did not fold after going down a goal and freshman Joey Moua (Eau Claire, Wis.) bounced the ball into the far corner in the 78th minute from 15 yards out.

The Firebirds struck again with a header off a corner in the 83rd minute to secure the victory.

Carthage held a 21-5 advantage in shots on Sunday night. Joey Moua and Ivan Cuellar finished with two shots each.

Jeremy Munoz finished the evening with four saves.

The Falcons return to action on Friday night in Glendale as they look to retain the Oktoberfest Cup against Carroll.
