Men's Soccer drops conference opener against Dominican

RIVER FOREST, Ill. – The Concordia University Wisconsin men's soccer team dropped its Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference opener against seven-time defending league champion Dominican University, 2-1, Saturday afternoon.

A Logan Marvin goal at the 68:24 mark proved to be the game-winner, as he broke a 1-1 tie, scoring on a header off a cross pass from Zack Venzon. The Marvin goal was also the only scoring in the second half.

DU built a 1-0 lead at the 25:36 mark as RJ Dralle scored a rebound goal. Marco Alvarez was credited with an assist on the opening goal of the match. That 1-0 lead would not last long as the Falcons tied things at 1-1 just 2:44 later when junior Paul Stuebs (Neenah, Wis.) scored on an unassisted goal. It was Stuebs first goal of the 2013 season.

The Stars held a 28-15 edge in shots and an 11-4 advantage in shots on goal. Marvin had a game-best seven shots to lead the Stars. CUW had three players finish with a team-best three shots Stuebs, freshman Gavin Winston (Park Forest, Ill.) and sophomore Keegan Van Dusseldorp (Burlington, Wis.).

Junior Eric Vogel (Itasca, Ill.) stopped seven shots for the Falcons while his counterpart, Gabriel Gongora, made three saves in his win.

CUW (2-4-1, 0-0-1 NACC) will look for conference win number one on Wednesday when they host Lakeland College in a NACC match. Play is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. at Fitting Field and live stats and audio will be available from CUWFalcons.com.
