Vogel records third straight shutout as Men's Soccer plays to scoreless draw

CHICAGO – Junior goalkeeper Eric Vogel continued his strong play to start the 2013 season as he recorded his third straight shutout, helping the Concordia University Wisconsin men's soccer team play to a 0-0 draw with North Park University Tuesday evening.
Vogel (Itasca, Ill.) made 11 saves, running his scoreless minutes streak to 311:17 in the process. He hasn't allowed a goal since the 68:43 mark of the season-opener against Saint John's University.
The starting defensive unit of senior Jacob Pope (Muskego, Wis.) and sophomores Mark Samuel (Brookfield, Wis.), Mitchell Boehm (Plymouth, Wis.) and Jake Barnes (Fort Atkinson, Wis.) played strong in front of the keeper, making things difficult for the Vikings offense. Sophomore Nicholas Hopper (Menomonee Falls, Wis.) also contributed to the defense, while junior captain Paul Stuebs (Neenah, Wis.) played strong in the midfield for CUW.
Unfortunately for the Falcons, North Park also got exceptional play in goal as Wesley Woodley made nine saves in his shutout. North Park outshot the Falcons, 26-12 but shots on goal were much closer as NPU held a slight 11-9 edge, with CUW finishing with a .750 shot on goal percentage.
The opening half saw North Park hold an 8-5 edge in shots as Vogel made four first-half saves for the Falcons. He made five saves in the second 45 minutes of play with the Vikings controlling the shots, 15-5. Each team tallied two shots in the overtime sessions.
Jonas Petterson and Fredrik Greiff each recorded a match-high four shots for the host Vikings. Sophomore Keegan Van Dusseldorp (Burlington, Wis.) had a team-best three shots for CUW, all three coming on goal. Junior captain Diego Campos (Milwaukee, Wis.) and freshmen Gavin Winston (Park Forest, Ill.) and Jordan Moehn (Fond du Lac, Wis.) each finished with two shots for the Falcons.
CUW (2-1-1) returns to the pitch Sunday when they host the University of St. Thomas in its home-opener. The Falcons will play six of their next seven matches at home and the match against the Tommies is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Live audio and stats will be available from CUWFalcons.com.
