Pearson, Romanuik help Men's Hockey edge UW-Stout

MEQUON, Wis. – Freshman Jim Pearson scored two power play goals and sophomore goaltender Jack Romanuik and the Concordia University Wisconsin Men's Hockey defense played a solid game, helping lead the Falcons to a 3-2 win over UW-Stout Saturday night. The Falcons held on with a strong defensive effort over the final two minutes of play, 1:34 of those with the Blue Devils pulling their goalie in favor of an extra attacker.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Falcons led 3-1 for much of the final period, but UW-Stout scored with 2:11 remaining to cut the lead to 3-2. Romanuik (Melfort, Saskatchewan) and the defense held on late, playing impressive against the Blue Devils after they pulled their goalie. Sophomore Stefen Seel (Invermere, British Columbia) had a blocked shot late in the game, which helped the clock run out, giving the Falcons the big home win. Romanuik finished the game with 30 saves.

- Pearson (Ashton, Ontario) was the Falcons weapon on the power play, converting goals in the first and second periods. Pearson put CUW up 2-0 just 6:43 into play on his first goal, assisted by freshman Dante Hahn and senior Brandt Weldon (The Pas, Manitoba).

- Hahn (Victoria, British Columbia) again helped on Pearson's second power play goal, this one coming 13:55 into the second period. Seel also assisted on the goal, which gave the Falcons a 3-0 lead at the time.

- The first CUW score came just 2:53 into play, a deflection from sophomore Eric Therrien (Willow Bunch, Saskatchewan). Freshman Jake Switzer (Swansea, Ill.) fired a shot and Therrien was there to deflect it in for the 1-0 advantage. Sophomore Adam Fauchoux (Prince Albert, Saskatchewan) also assisted on the play.

- The Blue Devils scored late in the second and then late in the third to cut the Falcons lead, but CUW would hold on for the one-goal win. The Falcons penalty kill was outstanding Saturday, as UW-Stout finished 1-for-7 on the power play. CUW was 2-for-6 with the advantage.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Romanuik is now tied for the most career wins in CUW history, picking up his 11th on Saturday night. He has played in just 24 games and made just 22 starts to tie the career record.

- The Falcons win was the third all-time against a WIAC opponent. The other two victories for CUW against WIAC schools came last season, one of those a 6-1 win over UW-Stout.

UP NEXT
- CUW will continue non-conference play next weekend with a Thanksgiving Cup series at Bethel. The Falcons will look to retain the Thanksgiving Cup for the fourth straight year and the series gets underway Friday night at 7 p.m.
