Esports struggles at the beginning of the week

MEQUON, Wis. – The CUW esports team had a rough start to the week. The Falcons competed in Fortnite, Call of Duty, Rocket League and Starcraft.

The Blue and White dropped a pair of matches to Northwest Missouri State (2-3) and Northern Iowa (1-3).

This loss hurt badly," said head coach Lewis Smith. "The loss to UNI wasn't as bad since they are the #11 team in the nation, but we definitely should've beat NWMS. Thankfully our early season success will get us into playoffs, but we badly need a layoff to get right."

In Rocket League play, the team of senior Alex Reimer (Sheboygan, Wis.), senior Ethan Koch (Fredericksburg, Iowa) and junior Austin Esterly (Lombard, Ill.) fell to Boise State with a 1-3 loss. Esterly led CUW with four goals and seven saves.

The Fortnite trio team of sophomore Austin Lichtenstein (Johnsburg, Ill.), Kodee Keys and junior Aidan O'Donnell (Oconomowoc, Wis.) finished in 103rd place with 287 points.

Five Falcons competed in Fortnite solo play on Tuesday. Freshman Steven Pieroni (Danvers, Mass.) was the highest finisher for the flock in 128th place with 432 points.

Senior Andrew Gordon (Olney, Md.) fell to Rex in Starcraft with a 0-2 loss on Monday.

"This was my first ever match that was casted," said Gordon. "Because Rex is a pro player whom they wanted to follow in the tournament. He was very aggressive during both games, and in the first game he did a very quick rush and was just a bit faster than I was with unit control. I think that I put up a good fight especially in the second game, and I was able to stay with him for most of it, but again he is just very skilled and managed to keep getting small advantages over me that added up throughout the game. I just need to keep practicing so that way I will be ready for him next time we play each other."
