Volleyball sweeps Alverno in home NACC match

MEQUON, Wis. – Concordia University Wisconsin held off Alverno College in the opening set before cruising to a 3-0 (25-21, 25-18, 25-8) home Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference victory inside the R. John Buuck Field House.
The opening set saw the Inferno within two points of the Falcons until a pair of attack errors ended their chances. The second and third frames were all CUW, as there was just one scoring tie before the final kill was recorded.
Junior Britta Duchow (Potter, Wis.) entered the match with 198 career blocks and finished with six (five assisted) against the Inferno to move her career total to 204 total blocks, which puts in her into 29th place all-time in NACC history.
Freshman Karina Klotz (Hubertus, Wis.) led the Falcons with 20 assists, to go along with nine digs, a career-high-tying four service aces and four kills. Junior Hannah Griffiths (Antigo, Wis.) led all players with 11 kills and 12 digs. Sophomore Kelsey Paramore (Tomahawk, Wis.) ended with 10 digs, while sophomore Jessica Eggebrecht (Napoleon, Ohio) smashed seven kills.
AC (9-11, 1-7 NACC) was led by Emily Otner who had nine kills and nine digs, while Meranda Masse had 18 assists and five digs.
CUW (11-15, 5-4 NACC) concluded the match with a .241 attack percentage and held the Inferno to a .009 attack percentage.
CUW held a 9-3 lead in the opening set before the Inferno responded to take a 13-11 advantage. The Falcons answered with their bread-and-butter play that gave Duchow back-to-back kills, giving them the momentum back. They would go on to take set one, 25-21.
From then on it was all CUW, as it won the second frame, 25-18, and third set, 25-8. During the third frame it built a sizeable 15-1 lead after Klotz served the first five points and sophomore Erin Howard served nine-straight points. The large lead allowed head coach Janelle Gabrielsen-Katz to play 13 players.
CUW returns to the court on Wednesday for a road NACC contest at Marian University, which is scheduled for 7 p.m.
