
Falcons Fight in Overtime at No. 5 Adrian
ADRIAN, Mich. – The Concordia Wisconsin women's hockey team took four of the six points from the weekend series at No. 5 Adrian. The Falcons battled but fell short in overtime, 3-2. The loss sends Concordia to 16-6-1 on the season and to 11-4-1 in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association with 35 points.
The Falcons struck early on Saturday with a goal 23 seconds into the contest.
Sophomore Naomi Black (Ottawa, Ontario) scored on the first shot of the game after the Falcons kept the puck in the offensive zone on multiple clear attempts. Black scored off assists from freshman Scout Stromberg (Tomahawk, Wis.) and sophomore Mackaylan McGown (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.).
In the second period, freshman Taylor Heleniak (Mercer, Wis.) scored on the power play as she kept chipping away on the loose puck in front of the net and scored off a shot from senior Natalie Mackrell (Florissant, Colo.) and a secondary assist to senior Olivia Kurtz (Plainfield, Ill.).
The Bulldogs stayed alive with a goal in the second period and tied the game with an extra attacker late in the third period.
Adrian earned the extra point with an overtime goal 3:33 into the extra session.
The Black and Gold outshot the Falcons on Saturday, 58-16.
Senior Kami McCardle (Jackson, Wis.) finished with 55 saves on the day.
Mackaylan McGown won 15 faceoffs against the Bulldogs.
The Falcons are essentially locked into the No. 3 seed in the NCHA Slaats Cup Playoffs. Adrian would have to lose both games against Trine and sweep Marian to move to the No. 2 seed. The Falcons host Marian on Friday at home. The Sabres are currently tied for fourth place with Lake Forest at 21 points. Aurora is also hunting for the fourth and final home quarterfinal spot, in sixth place at 20 points.
