WINONA, Minn. – The Concordia Wisconsin women's hockey team posted a statement victory on Saturday afternoon with a 4-3 win over the 15th-ranked Cardinals of Saint Mary's. The victory earns the weekend split for the Birds and lifts the Blue and White to 1-1-0 on the young season.
The Cardinals struck first on Saturday with a goal 3:29 into the contest.
Junior Makayla Spejcher (Green Bay, Wis.) tied the game in the final minute of the first period on a shot from the slot from a pass from senior Natalie Mackrell (Florissant, Colo.).
Saint Mary's struck again 8:47 into the second period.
Makayla Spejcher lit the lamp again in the second period on the power play from the near circle off a pass from freshman Taylor Heleniak (Mercer, Wis.).
The Blue team claimed the lead late in the second period off the stick of senior Amanda Bauer (Waunakee, Wis.) in front of the net after sophomore Mackaylan McGown (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) raced down the ice.
Sophomore Naomi Black (Ottawa, Ontario) scored on a two-on-one opportunity with Mackaylan McGown.
The Red and White cut into the Concordia lead with a power play goal, but the Falcons secured the upset.
Senior Kami McCardle (Jackson, Wis.) collected 20 saves in the victory.
The Cardinals held a 29-27 advantage in shots on Saturday.
Makayla Spejcher led the flock with eight shots against Saint Mary's.
Saturday was the first ranked victory for Concordia since Nov. 1, 2022, at No. 5 Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
The Falcons turn their attention to conference play as Trine travels to Mequon on Friday.
