Falcon Women defeat Concordia Chicago for the third time this season
RIVER FOREST, Ill.
-- Concordia University Wisconsin pulled away from
stubborn Concordia University Chicago in the second half, recording
a 54-43 win in the Northern Athletics Conference Challenge Game on
Saturday afternoon in Geiseman Gymnasium.
Head coach Stacey Brunner-Jones' Falcons struggled to
a 24-21 halftime lead, missing all five of their 3-point attempts
and turning the ball over numerous times in the first 20
minutes.
"We have to rely on our half court defense to keep us
in games when we are out of sync offensively," said
Brunner-Jones. "Our defensive effort was pretty consistent."
The Cougars took a 27-26 lead with 17 minutes
remaining in the game before CUW (15-10) went on a 14-5 run and
maintained a six-point margin or better from the 11 minute mark the
rest of the way.
Junior guard Brittany Zietlow (Oak Creek, Wis.) had 10
of her 12 points after the break to key the Falcon offense. Her
teammates dominated the boards, holding a 38-26 advantage on the
glass by the end of the contest. Sophomore Katie Luethe (Oshkosh,
Wis.) and junior Camille Parsons (Urbana, Ill.) were the other CUW
players in double figures with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
CUW shot a respectable 42 percent from the floor,
while holding their opponents to 33 percent from the
field. Christina Calabrese and Bobbie May had 11 points each for
the Cougars (9-16).
Brunner-Jones' squad, seeded No. 5 in NAC
Tournament, will travel to Sheboygan, Wis., on Wednesday for a 7
p.m. NAC Tournament Quarterfinal matchup with No. 4 Lakeland
College. The Muskies have defeated the Falcons twice
this season.
