Falcons hang on against Regents 51-46
Rockford
The one perennial constant in the Concordia women's basketball
program since Coach Stacey Brunner arrived six years ago is
defense. Last night the Falcons definitely needed "D" as they
struggled from the field but still managed to get past upset-minded
Rockford 51- 46.
Playing without their injured "motor" (Melanie Kulibert), CUW was
forced into a low-scoring half court game that was played at
Rockford's pace.
Brunner's cagers, 63-4 in league play over the past 4 seasons
and looking for their fourth consecutive league
championship, worked hard just to forge a 25-25 halftime tie, put
together one exciting 13-0 second half run, and then went the
final 8:52 without a field goal. Five free throw successes over
that final time span actually provided the winning margin.
Trailing 32-28 with 16 minutes remaining, Concordia began creating
turnovers galore while slicing up the Regent zone on the offensive
end. The nine point cushion created by that flurry proved just
enough to hold off the frustrated hosts.
CUW's Pearl Wallace, 6 of 9 from the floor, led the way offensively
with 15 points and a dozen rebounds.
First place Concordia (12-1 in the NAC) hosts Benedictine on
Saturday at 2:00pm in the Buuck Fieldhouse.
