Softball splits on opening day of Finlandia Dome Tournament

MARQUETTE, Mich. – Sadie Strasser hit a walk-off single in her first collegiate game, helping the Concordia University Wisconsin Softball team to a split on the opening day of the Finlandia Dome Tournament.

The Falcons began the day by defeating UW-Oshkosh 3-2 thanks to a two-run seventh inning. Strasser (Gladstone, Mich.) capped off the comeback by singling in freshman Deidra Weinberger (Mayville, Wis.) for the one-run win. CUW tied the game when freshman Jamie Reiser (Ingleside, Ill.) on an RBI from freshman Kaitlin Radue (Valders, Wis.).

The comeback effort allowed junior pitcher Melissa Perkins (Park Forest, Ill.) to get the win after throw a gem for the Falcons. Perkins scattered five hits in the complete-game effort. She finished with two strikeouts while allowing two earned runs.

Reiser had two hits to pace the Falcons offensive attack. Freshman Christine Sharon (Cornell, Mich.) had a triple, while Reiser, sophomore Alexis Holsten (Oshkosh, Wis.) and freshman Haley Spoerl (Salem, Wis.) all belted doubles.

In the second game of the day CUW fell against Simpson College, a team that went 4-0 on Saturday on is receiving votes in the latest NFCA Coaches Poll.

The Falcons couldn't weather the Storm as Simpson belted five home runs. Spoerl hit her first round-tripper for the Falcons, a solo shot in the fourth inning. She finished the game with two hits, while sophomore Carly Sobrilsky (Brookfield, Wis.) had a double.

CUW will play two more games tomorrow at the Finlandia Dome Tournament. The Falcons will open play against Finlandia at 1:15 eastern time, and then will take on Lake Superior State in their second game.
