Falcons Outduel Eagles On Homecoming

The Concordia University Wisconsin football team secured a Homecoming victory against the Benedictine Eagles, taking a 28-0 win in its second shutout performance in three weeks.

The Falcons' win marked their first over conference foe Benedictine since September 2019, having been outscored 113-58 in the teams' last three meetings. Even more notably, the Concordia defense managed to shut down an offense that had not been held scoreless since 2012.

Despite having their offensive playmakers held largely at bay, Benedictine still managed to put pressure on the Falcons' defense, running eleven plays within the Concordia 40-yard line. Ultimately, the defense withstood the pressure, forcing four incompletions and two interceptions, both of which came from senior defensive back Evan Lischka (Manitowoc, Wis).

On the offensive side of the ball, the Falcons were dominant on the run, picking up 216 yards on the ground. Short, steady gains proved to be the recipe for success, as highlighted by four touchdowns of five yards or fewer. Junior Pierre Summers III (Columbus, Ga.) would open the scoring late in the second quarter with a three-yard run, and senior Ashar Thomas (Punta Gorda, Fla.) would pick up two touchdowns in the third quarter, pushing the lead to 21-0. Summers III would end up bookending the scoring for the day, by way of a 5-yard insurance touchdown late in the fourth quarter.

Quarterbacks senior Michael Purkey (Woodstock, Ill.) and freshman Roman Funk (Scottsdale, Ariz.) would each complete four passes for the Falcons, for totals of 24 and 68 yards, respectively.

The Falcons will look to continue their winning ways on the other side of the upcoming bye week, seeking their fifth consecutive win on October 21st against the St. Norbert Green Knights.
