Bethel stuns Women's Hockey with late overtime goal

MEQUON, Wis. – As time winded down in the overtime session it appeared the Concordia University Wisconsin Women's Hockey team and Bethel University were going to end Friday night's non-conference matchup in a tie. Caroline Kivisto of the visiting Royals had other ideas, however, scoring with 8.2 seconds remaining in overtime, resulting in a 3-2 loss for the Falcons at the Ozaukee Ice Center.

THE BASICS
- Final Score: Bethel 3, Concordia Wisconsin 2 (F/OT)
- Location: Ozaukee Ice Center – Mequon, Wis.
- Records: Bethel 4-5-2, Concordia Wisconsin 4-8-1

HOW IT HAPPENED

- Kivisto took a perfect pass from Erin Harper, who was deep in her own zone and found Kivisto at the blue line, and buried the game-winning goal top shelf for the Royals. Harper finished with three points for Bethel.

- Each team scored in the first period, as Bethel opened play with a power play goal just 1:15 into the game. It was Harper who scored, while Natalie Simons and Megan O'Brien added assists.

- Sophomore Lexi Holman (Sauk Rapids, Minn.) tied the game at 1-1 for the Falcons with her fourth goal of the season, coming 7:40 into the game. Junior Veronika Metanova (Palatine, Ill.) and senior Lexi Machuga (Rochester Hills, Mich.) assisted on Holman's score.

- Metanova gave the Falcons the lead with her fourth goal of the year, this one coming with just 11 seconds remaining in the second period. Machuga and Holman each played a role in the goal, both players getting credited with assists. It was Holman's team-leading 10th assist of the season.

- Bethel would tie the game on a fluky goal 6:21 into the third period. It appeared the puck actually went in off of a Falcons player skate, but it was Briita Nelson who was credited with the score. Harper added an assist on the play.

- Bethel outshot the Falcons by a 31-23 margin as freshman Christina Pattengale (Portage, Mich.) picked up 28 saves for CUW. Maggie Straka stopped 21 shots to get the win for the Royals.

- Bethel finished the game 1-for-4 on the power play, while the normally potent Falcons power play was held scoreless on three chances.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

- This was the fifth meeting between the two programs and the first since the 2011-12 season. CUW dropped to 1-3-1 all-time against Bethel. The lone win came on December 10, 2011, a neutral site game played in Tomahawk, Wis.
