Women's Hockey scores program-record nine times in rout of Finlandia

MEQUON, Wis. – Goals were coming early and often for the Concordia University Wisconsin Women's Hockey team Saturday in an NCHA matchup against Finlandia. The Falcons scored a program-best nine times en route to a 9-1 win over the Lions.

THE BASICS

- Final Score: Concordia Wisconsin 9, Finlandia 1
- Location: Ozaukee Ice Center – Mequon, Wis.
- Records: Concordia Wisconsin 3-2-1, 2-2-0 NCHA; Finlandia 0-5-0, 0-3-0

HOW IT HAPPENED

- The Falcons scored four times in the first period, two of those coming from Nicole Krumwiede (Itasca, Ill.). Krumwiede was one of three Falcons players to score two goals in the win, sophomore Lexi Holman (Sauk Rapids, Minn.) and junior Brittany Sticha (Lonsdale, Minn.) being the others.

- Holman's first goal and Krumwiede's second were scored just 15 seconds apart from one another, giving the Falcons a 3-0 lead at the time.

- Freshman Kristen Kennedy (London, Ontario) netted her first career collegiate goal to close out the first period for the Falcons. Kennedy's score was the first of three power play goals for CUW.

- Sticha had two goals within the first 2:21 of the second stanza to help the Falcons build a 6-0 lead early in the frame. Kennedy assisted on both of Sticha's goals as she finished with a career-high three points.

- In the third period CUW would add three goals for the 9-1 win. Freshman Emily Kuhlman (Cold Springs, Minn.) had the first of those, which was also her first career collegiate goal. Also scoring was Holman, with a power play goal and senior Katherine Pauletti (Roseville, Minn.) who gave the Falcons the record with the ninth goal of the game.

- Sophomore Allison Kurek (Chicago, Ill.) didn't get much action at goaltender for the Falcons in picking up her first win of her career. She stopped eight shots in the win as CUW held a 54-9 edge in shots.

- The Falcons also had an advantage on the power play going 3-for-8 compared to 0-for-3 for the Lions.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

- The nine goals surpassed the previous record of eight, which happened on three different occasions. Two of those eight-goal games also came against Finlandia, the last being November 1 of the 2013-14 season.

- CUW finished with 24 points (9G, 15A) which was also a program record, surpassing the previous 22-point effort against Marian on January 19, 2011. The Falcons 15 assists was also a program record, also topping the January 19, 2011 Marian game (14 assists).

- Junior Brandi Muller (Anchorage, Alaska) tallied three assists in the win as did senior captain Lexi Machuga (Rochester Hills, Mich.). Muller now leads the team with eight points, while Holman and Sticha are close behind with seven.

- The multi-goal effort was the first for Krumwiede since her first collegiate game. The previous two-goal effort was in the November 1 eight-goal outburst against Finlandia in 2013.

- Freshman Ellie Woodman (Janesville, Wis.) and senior Chelsea Regan (Oakdale, Minn.) played their first game together as a defensive pairing and responded by each posting a +4 plus/minus rating.

- Sticha had four goals in two home wins this week for the Falcons. She also had two goals, while adding an assist in the 4-0 win over Marian Tuesday.

- The three-assist efforts were the second time both Machuga and Muller helped on three goals in a game. Machuga's other one came last season against Adrian, while Muller had three against Adrian in the 2013-14 season.
