Women's Basketball Notched a Thrilling Season

MEQUON, Wis. - The Concordia Wisconsin women's basketball put together another solid season in their 2022-23 campaign: they went 16-11 overall and a stellar 14-4 in conference play.

The Falcons also did an excellent job protecting home court as they went 8-3 at the R. John Buuck Field House.

On November 12, the Falcons earned their first victory against the Golden Tornadoes of Geneva, 81-72, at the Hope Tip-Off Tournament in Holland, Michigan. In that contest, four Falcons had 10+ points as junior Erin Viergutz (Clintonville, Wis.) led the way with 19 points and eight rebounds.

Later in the month, on November 30, the Falcons went on the road and defeated conference rival Wisconsin Lutheran 67-62 as senior Emily Hafemann (Hales Corner, Wis.) put up 27 points and eight rebounds while fellow senior Regan Obry (Neenah, Wis.) contributed 16 points and two steals.

For her performance early in the season, Emily Hafemann claimed the NACC Student-Athlete of the Week for a second-straight week.

Following that big win over the Warriors, the Falcons rode that momentum into December and extended their win streak to four games with wins over Rockford, MSOE, and Illinois Tech, defeating opponents by an average margin of 22.6 points. In that Rockford win, Emily Hafemann also recorded his 1000th career point.

On January 7, the Falcons started another winning streak when they avenged an early season loss by defeating Concordia Chicago 76-55. Regan Obry turned in an excellent performance with 21 points and six rebounds.

Following that win, the Falcons completed their three-game win streak with wins over Alverno and Illinois Tech.

In February, the Falcons played their best basketball as they closed out the regular season, winning six straight, punching their ticket to the NACC Tournament as the fourth seed. Notable wins during those final six games included a 63-61 win over Benedictine as Emily Hafemann recorded 31 points with six rebounds and three assists, as well as a Senior Day win over Edgewood, which saw seniors Emily Hafemann and Aubrey Buchholtz (Seymour, Wis.) combine for 36 points and nine rebounds.

Once again, Emily Hafemann earned NACC Student-Athlete of the Week honors for her exceptional play on February 7.

In the NACC Tournament Quarterfinals, the Falcons defeated the Lakeland Muskies for the second time in three days from a game-winning layup from sophomore Lindsey Lonigro (Deerfield, Wis.) to advance the Falcons to the NACC Tournament Semifinals. In the win over Lakeland, the senior trio of Emily Hafemann, Aubrey Buccholtz, and Reagan Obry came through in the clutch and led the Falcons in points as Hafemann recorded a career-high 35 points, while Buccholtz added 16 off of the bench while Obry contributed 11.

The Falcons ended on February 23 against Wisconsin Lutheran in a tight, back-and-forth matchup which saw the Warriors pull away in the final minutes.

In the postseason, Emily Hafemann continued to rack up accolades, earning CSC Academic All-District Team for the third time in her career. Then on March 1, Hafemann was voted to the All-NACC First Team by head coaches in the conference. On March 15, Emily Hafemann was voted to CSC Academic All-American Second Team.

On the season, Emily Hafemann averaged 15.9 points, with 5.4 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game.

The Falcons now look forward to their 2023-24 season and will look to post another solid season.
