Saints Slash Falcons in Season Opener

MEQUON, Wis. - The CUW men's hockey team opened play on Friday night against the Saints of St. Scholastica.

The Saints lit the lamp in the fourth minute and netted their second in the seventh minute to take the 2-0 lead.

The Falcons netted their first goal off the stick of freshman Noah Roitman (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) with assists from freshmen Grant Newcomer (McFarland, Wis.) and Bryar Dittmer (Chatham, Ont.).

The Saints pushed the lead back out by two with their third goal just 20 seconds later to take the 3-1 lead.

Newcomer netted his first goal of the season and the Falcons' second in the first minute of the second period. Newcomer was assisted by freshman Derek Humphreys (Spokane, Wash.). On a powerplay in the fifth minute, Newcomer found freshman Dain Sardelli (Hebron, N.D.) for the game-tying goal.

St. Scholastica scored six straight goals that spanned the rest of the matchup to take the 9-3 victory in the season-opener.

Junior Liam McGarva (Fort Saskatchewan, Alta.) recorded 17 saves in his 39:58 between the posts and freshman Gabe Rosek (East Lansing, Mich.) recorded 18 in 20 minutes between the posts.

The Falcons continue their home weekend on Saturday with a matchup against Wisconsin-Stout.
