Sabres Stave Off Falcon Comeback

MEQUON, Wis. – The CUW ACHA hockey team took on the Marian Sabres Saturday night for a shot at the Mequon du Lac Cup.

The early part of the first period saw some pretty even skating with a couple shots a piece for each team.

The Sabres started off the scoring with a 5th minute, power-play goal.  They went on to score another 11 seconds later off of a two-on-zero breakaway.

The Sabres went on to score their second power-play goal in the 13th minutes of the first period.

The first period ended with three unanswered.

The Sabres came back into the second period with force scoring in the 10th minute to make it 0-4.

The Falcons scored their first goal in the 12th minute of the second period on a shorthanded, one-on-none attempt from Nick Roberts (Milwaukee, Wis.).  Freshman Tommy Cassel (Grafton, Wis.) came up with the assist.

The Sabres pulled away even further after the Falcons couldn't convert on a five-on-three.  In the 3rd minute, the Sabres scored an unassisted goal fresh out of the penalty box.

The Falcons looked to come back with a goal in the fifth minute on a power-play of the third period off the stick of junior Easton Williams (Racine, Wis.) with assists from sophomore John Swiatek (Rochester, N.Y.) and freshman Garrett Wilderman (Waukesha, Wis.).

The Falcons scored again four minutes later in the ninth minute off the stick of Garrett Wilderman to get within two.

The Falcons got within one with a goal 24.7 seconds to go in the third period.  This goal was netted by senior Wyatt Wilderman (Bear Dance, Mont.).  The power-play goal was assisted by Gerrett Wilderman and Swiatek.

This would be the end of the scoring as the Sabres held on to the one goal victory.

The ACHA hockey team returns to the ice on November 5th as they take on St. Norbert in De Pere.
