Softball claims Dome Classic crown

MARQUETTE, Mich. – The CUW softball team whipped a couple of Wisconsin teams on Sunday afternoon to claim the Finlandia Dome Classic crown. The Falcons opened the day with a 6-5 victory over Wis.-Stevens Point and sprayed the Yellowjackets of Wis.-Superior in the weekend finale, 8-0. The 4-0 start is the first for the Falcons in this millennium.

The Pointers struck first on Sunday with a 1-0 lead in the second inning.

The Falcons started the scoring in the third inning on a double from senior Molly O'Connell (New London, Wis.) that scored senior Nicole Lewis (Manhattan, Ill.). Senior Samantha Schloegl (Genoa City, Wis.) then scored on a sacrifice fly from freshman Claudia Utz (Lockport, Ill.) to give the Falcons the lead.

The Purple and Yellow tied the game up at two in the fourth inning.

Junior Jenna Pozezinski (Lake Villa, Ill.) cleared the bases in the fifth inning with a triple that scored sophomore Taylor Kuske (Kaukauna, Wis.), Molly O'Connell and junior Kelsey Bollon (Orangeville, Ill.).

UWSP did not fold on Sunday and tied the game with three runs in the seventh inning.

Freshman Sydney Erdmann (Geneva, Ill.) scored the game-winning run on a fielder's choice that scored Kelsey Bollon.

Sophomore Gina Followell (Romeoville, Ill.) had six strikeouts in the start. Sophomore Nicki Becker (Brodhead, Wis.) picked up the victory and three strikeouts.

The CUW offense exploded in the second inning against Wisconsin-Superior with three runs.

Emma Schimberg started the scoring by getting Jenna Pozezinski across home plate.

Sophomore Krystal Cortes (Aurora, Ill.) then scored Claudia Utz with a ball in the infield.

Sydney Erdmann had a single that plated Emma Schimberg.

In the third inning, after a single, Samantha Schloegl scored on a double from Kelsey Bollon.

Krystal Cortes went on to clear the bases with a single that scored sophomore Kristen Fontana (Hickory Hills, Ill.) and Claudia Utz.

Molly O'Connell had a double in the fourth inning that had Samantha Schloegl safely cross home plate.

The bat of Krystal Cortes ended the game as Claudia Utz scored to trigger the mercy rule.

Nicki Becker earned the victory in the circle on Sunday with two strikeouts.

The Falcons will return to action on March 14 under the Florida sun.
