Softball sweeps opening day

MARQUETTE, Mich. – The CUW softball team opened the season with a pair of victories at the Finlandia Dome Classic. The Falcons opened the season with a 10-0 victory against Northland and closed the day with an 8-0 victory against Finlandia.

Sophomore Gina Followell (Romeoville, Ill.) took care of business and started the year with a no-hitter against the Lumberjills and finished with 11 strikeouts.

Senior Samantha Schloegl (Genoa City, Wis.) was the first Falcon to score in 2020 off of the first hit for junior Kelsey Bollon (Orangeville, Ill.) as a Falcon in the first inning.

In the second inning, sophomore Krystal Cortes (Aurora, Ill.) scored freshman Claudia Utz (Lockport, Ill.) on a double and then scored on a pass ball. Senior Molly O'Connell (New London, Wis.) then scored sophomore Taylor Kuske (Kaukauna, Wis.) to close the inning.

Krystal Cortes struck again in the third inning on a double and then scored on a double from freshman Sydney Erdmann. Erdmann then scored on a double from senior Nicole Lewis (Manhattan, Ill.).

The fourth inning scoring started with a double off the bat of Kelsey Bollon to score Samantha Schloegl. Senior Emma Schimberg (Random Lake, Wis.) then had a two-run home run. Nicole Lewis had the final hit of the game that scored the last CUW run.

Against Finlandia, Kelsey Bollon started the scoring in the first inning to score Samantha Schloegl.

The Falcons scored three runs in the second inning. Krystal Cortes scored on a passed ball, then Sydney Erdmann crossed home plate on an error. Molly O'Connell then singled to left field to score Nicole Lewis.

Freshman Ashley Zappa (Zion, Ill.) scored on an error in the third inning.

In the fourth inning, Molly O'Connell scored on an error and Kelsey Bollon scored on a groundout from Emma Schimberg.

Emma Schimberg closed the scoring in the sixth inning on a single to right-center field to score Molly O'Connell.

Sophomore Nicki Becker (Brodhead, Wis.) earned the victory in the circle and finished with seven strikeouts. Sophomore Alyssa Vilkoski (Greenfield, Wis.) had two strikeouts in an inning of relief.

The Falcons will close the weekend on Sunday against UW-Stevens Point and UW-Superior.
