Softball bats come alive to salvage split at Edgewood

VERONA, Wis. – After being shut out in game one of a NACC doubleheader, the Concordia University Wisconsin bats came alive for a 10-2 game two victory, helping the Falcons salvage a split Thursday night at Edgewood College. CUW was defeated 3-0 in the opener.

GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS
- The Falcons led 3-2 after five in game two before exploding for seven runs over the final two frames for the 10-2 win. The 3-4 hitters of the Falcons in sophomore Deidra Weinberger (Mayville, Wis.) and junior Carly Sobrilsky (Brookfield, Wis.) led the way, combining for five hits and five RBI in the victory.

- Sophomore Emily Brekke (Waterford, Wis.) was effective in the circle for the Falcons, earning the complete game victory. She struck out six, while allowing two earned on six hits for her fifth win of the season.

- The Falcons fell behind 1-0 after one in game two, but put up runs in the second, third and fourth innings, taking a 3-1 lead. Sobrilsky had an RBI single in the third, while freshman Maddie Zazas (Mundelein, Ill.) delivered a run-scoring single in the fourth.

- The Eagles got a solo home run from Shannon Whitmus in the bottom of the fifth before CUW broke the game open with a three-run sixth. Weinberger, Sobrilsky and sophomore Christine Sharon (Cornell, Mich.) drove in runs in the sixth.

- The Falcons would add four insurance runs in the seventh with Weinberger and Sobrilsky again driving in runs. Weinberger finished the game 3-for-5 with a double, three runs scored and two driven in. Sobrilsky was 2-for-5 with three RBI in the win. Zazas and junior Lexi Holsten (Oshkosh, Wis.) each collected two hits with Holsten and freshman Delaney O'Keefe (Muskego, Wis.) scoring two runs apiece. One of Holsten's two hits was a double, while freshman Becky Bonnin (Kenosha, Wis.) added a double.

GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS
- Edgewood's Rachel DeJongh was the story of the opener, as she threw a complete game shutout. DeJongh scattered five hits and struck out seven, issuing just one free pass.

- Senior Melissa Perkins (Park Forest, Ill.) pitched well for the Falcons, allowing just one earned run in a complete game effort of her own. She struck out three in the process. The Falcons one error proved costly, allowing two unearned runs in the second. The other Edgewood run came in the first, with the Eagles going up 3-0 after two.

- Jackie Diesch drove in two for Edgewood in the opener, while Sabrina Maicke was 3-for-3 to pace the Eagles attack.

- CUW will be back in action tomorrow, hosting Mount Mary in a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch from the CUW Softball Field is set 3 p.m.
