Falcons Surge Past Aurora in Third Period

MEQUON, Wis. - The Concordia Wisconsin women's hockey team notched its second win of the season over the Aurora Spartans on Friday night, breaking free late in the third period of play. Junior Brooke Gibson (LaSalle, Ont.) notched two of Concordia's three goals, including the game-winner.

Freshman Mackaylan McGown (Inver Grove, Minn.) opened the game's scoring, registering a power play tally for the Falcons at 14:43 in the first period.

Neither team found the back of the net in the middle frame, which featured 17 saves from senior goaltender Annalina Van Hercke (Castle Rock, Colo.). Van Hercke would go on to make 43 saves on 44 shots, boasting a .977 save percentage.

The Spartans found the equalizer early in the third, as Melina Cane netted a power play goal in the opening three minutes of the period.

The Falcons would be awarded a five-minute power play in the period's 16th minute, which they held for the remainder of the game. Gibson wasted little time in finding the go-ahead goal, putting the Falcons in front, off of assists from McGown and sophomore Makayla Spejcher (Green Bay, Wis.). All three point-scorers on the goal clinched multi-point performances in the contest.

Gibson notched an insurance goal in the final minute of play, tallying her seventh of the season to grant the Falcons a 3-1 lead.

Concordia will be back on the ice on Saturday to play their third game in as many days, set to take on the 7-13-1 Marian Sabres.
